Watch the Sharps Defy the Nazis on PBS

Defying The Nazis Signature Art resizedIn 1939 an American couple, Unitarian Minister Waitstill Sharp and his wife Martha Sharp, agreed to a secret mission in Europe helping people escape the Nazis and their horrifying acts.

Over the next two years, the Sharps helped dozens find safety elsewhere. Ken Burns and Artemis Joukowsky, a grandson of the Sharps, created this documentary, which is airing next week on PBS.

Reisebericht: German Fest 2015!

German Fest 2015 was a blast--from the food to the music and from the culture tent to the Lederhosen!

And since it's a typical German thing to write a Reisebericht (a travel report), and I took pictures of the food (Ja, Bratwurst!), here is a Reisebericht in Bilder.

German Fest is a wonderful festival that takes place on the Sommerfest grounds directly on Lake Michigan. Luckily the weather was gorgeous and there was plenty of sun and fresh air for us to enjoy!

This weekend I'm off to German Fest in Milwaukee, WI! This Fest has been taking place since 1981 and is a fantastic weekend filled with Brats, Bienenstich, and all things German. This will be my second visit--look for some pictures coming soon!

Hier wird Urlaub gemacht!


Ab heute mache ich zwei Wochen Urlaub vom Bloggen. Unterricht gibt's noch, und ich mache auch gerade eine Weiterbildung, also habe ich wenig Zeit zu bloggen. Also sehen wir uns in ein paar Wochen wieder!

Live Demonstration: Brick Oven Bread Baking. June 1, 4-6 p.m.

The German Settlement Heritage Society of Hudson, Wisconsin is hosting a bread bake at the restored brick oven on June 1, 2014 from 4-6 p.m.

The restored brick oven is at 837 County Rd. N, Hudson, WI 54016 (5 miles east of Hudson, WI) and is on the site of the first German settlement in the area, the Nicholas Schwalen farm.

Nutrition and Outreach Specialist Ross Safford will be conducting the demonstration with his humor, dough-tossing techniques, and stories of baking bread.

Should German Go Gender-Neutral?

This Guardian article reports that the German justice ministry has determined that Germany's state institutions must make their language gender-neutral. That's right--no more der, die, das.

Wer, wie, was?!

So perhaps everything will become 'das,' so "das Baum," "das Auto," and "das Flasche." Or maybe it will all become 'die,' so 'die Baum,' 'die Auto,' and 'die Flasche.'


Certainly the cases would become easier, and so would learning vocabulary, but wouldn't that take some of the fun out...

Wisconsin Woman Returns Long-lost German Documents

A very thoughtful Wisconsin woman found German-language documents belonging to other Wisconsin residents whose family escaped the Holocaust.
