Here's a short story about how I learned this concept:
Advent ist nicht Weihnachten.
Advent ist nicht Weihnachten.
Advent is not Christmas.
Advent ist nicht Weihnachten.
In Germany I conducted a small village chorus for a year or two and when it came time to pick out music for an Adventskonzert I unintentionally picked out a Christmas song.
Members of the choir very clearly explained to me that Advent ist nicht Weihnachten and no Christmas songs would be sung until Christmas.
I never made that mistake again.
